Guernsey not taking in refugees

The States had looked at participating in the UK Government’s Syrian Vulnerable Persons Relocation Scheme, which offers temporary resettlement to refugees.

However, following a review of Guernsey’s infrastructure and legal framework, the island’s Policy Council said that the ‘supporting infrastructure’ was not fully in place ‘to accept these vulnerable individuals in the way which meets their specific needs’.

In addition, it said a number of legal and practical issues had been identified relating to general refugee rights, which must be fully understood and resolved.

Last year, Jersey’s Chief Minister Ian Gorst announced that the Island would not be taking any refugees, following concerns that the move could set a precedent and potentially leave the Island powerless to prevent other refugees coming to Jersey in the future.
