The online petition addresses Senator Andrew Green directly, saying that using the green space as a site for a new hospital is an ‘unconscionable decision’.
Other sites for the multi-million-pound facility include the Waterfront, Overdale or extending the existing hospital. However, Senator Green recently called the park a ‘strong contender’.
The petition, which was launched four weeks ago, states: ‘The development of the park would take away an essential piece of open public space in a highly developed urban area, where Jersey already falls far below international standards.
‘We strongly urge the Health Minister and the Council of Ministers to listen to the views of the people of Jersey, and to identify an alternative site for the construction of a new hospital.’
Campaigners have also united to form a group to preserve the park.
A campaign group, Save People’s Park, has called a public meeting at the Town Hall from 7.30 pm on Thursday 11 February to give Islanders the chance to voice their views about building on the land.
