At just before 4.45 pm the 16-year-old became aware of smoke alarms being set off as he was having a shower and raced down the stairs to find smoke filling the kitchen.
He immediately located his brother and they both evacuated the building.
Firefighters responded a short time later, entering the building using breathing sets and extinguishing the small blaze, which was started when a carrier bag was caught alight by a nearby candle.
The two boys were uninjured.
Following the incident, crew commander Terry Noel said: ‘The Fire Service reminds the public about leaving candles unattended, even for a short period of time, however it also commends the young man for his actions, who wisely made no attempt to tackle the fire, instead choosing to evacuate with his brother.’
