Ministers reject gas price controls

Ministers are urging States Members to reject on Tuesday a proposition from Deputy Geoff Southern that calls on the Treasury Minister to bring forward regulations for approval by the Assembly which would force Jersey Gas to reduce its prices.

Under the Jersey Gas Company (Jersey) Law 1989, the States can determine the tariffs set by the firm if it appears to be ‘necessary to do so in the public interest’.

However, the Council of Ministers say that formal price regulation is a ‘significant step’ that should not be undertaken lightly.

In comments lodged ahead of today’s debate, ministers asked politicians to ‘consider carefully who is the right body to act as gas market regulator’ and what additional resources might be required.
