States may scrap immigration target

Currently the States work to a target of net inward migration – the difference between the number of people moving to the Island and those leaving – of 325 people, which is set out in the interim population policy. Departments use that figure to plan services and set budgets.

However, Senator Gorst said that it was not yet known if the new permanent population policy due to be brought forward before the end of the year would contain a target.

Meanwhile, he said, ‘some exciting projects’ were due to be announced soon to encourage local people to work in the hospitality industry, reducing the reliance on immigrant workers.
