HOLDERS of the winning Jersey Hospice Million-Pound Lottery ticket heard their numbers called live on Friday – and did not realise that they had taken the top prize.

Islanders Ann Shelton and Denise de Carteret were present at the Royal Yacht when ticket 6666 was revealed to have won, but the pair thought the draw was being done in reverse.

The two, whose syndicate includes Mrs de Carteret’s daughter, Nicky Rushton, looked shell-shocked as they spoke to one of the lottery’s hosts, Deputy Murray Norton.

Mrs de Carteret, whose husband is being cared for by Jersey Hospice, bought the ticket from the organisation’s headquarters during a visit to Clarkson House.

Shortly after winning, she said: ‘It’s absolutely out of this world.

‘It’s so funny because we were sitting at the back and heard 6666, but it didn’t sound like a big build-up.

‘I thought they were doing it in reverse order.

‘I had a funny feeling about the ticket. I went to Hospice and the man spread all the tickets out. I saw 6666 and just thought that seems quite a lucky number.’

Shortly after the final draw, Mrs de Carteret tried to call her daughter to break the good news, but didn’t manage to get through.

She and Mrs Shelton, along with their husbands, celebrated at Café Ristorante – a favourite venue of theirs – on Friday evening.

Scores of people turned up to watch the draw, which was hosted by ITV presenters Jess Dunsdon and Rob Jones.

And following live music four Islanders – former boxer Billy Walker, Miss Battle of Flowers Chantelle Mundy, long-distance swimmer Sally Minty-Gravett and endurance runner Paul Burrows – selected the lucky numbers.

Following the win, Mrs Shelton, who works as a carer at specialist dementia unit Beaumont Villa, said: ‘I’m going to buy a flat somewhere, as I’ve been living in my son’s flat for too long.

‘I’m elated – it’s wonderful.’

A total of £1.3 million was awarded in prize money for the annual Jersey Hospice lottery.
