Music teacher Ernie Mallett was honoured at a ceremony at Government House yesterday after being recognised in the New Year Honours List.
The drummer, who has taught hundreds of children over the years, also runs the Junior Battle of the Bands, works with the La Motte Street Youth Centre’s Rock Academy and is responsible for the music section at the Jersey Archive.
The medal was presented by the Lieutenant-Governor, General Sir John McColl, and recognises Mr Mallett’s services to young people, particularly in music education.
Mr Mallett, who still plays with the band Run For Cover with his brother Roy, said: ‘It’s been an absolutely brilliant day.
‘We had the medal presentation with about 50 people at Government House. The Lieutenant-Governor made a speech and then we went outside to the garden for drinks.
‘It’s an amazing medal.’
Mr Mallett attended the ceremony with his family, including wife Maria and daughter Michelle.
