The lifeboat was dispatched at 9.08 am and was alongside St Catherine’s breakwater at 10.37 am where it was met by Customs and Immigration officials and paramedics.

James Letto, deputy coastguard and VTS manager for Jersey Coastguard said: ‘The lifeboat was dispatched at 9.08 am this morning following a report from a French 14 metre vessel that someone on board had suffered a medical problem.

‘Initially, the report was made to the French coastguard but as the vessel was just off Les Ecrehous and within Jersey waters, it came under our responsibility.

‘The RNLI doctor was also tasked to go out on the lifeboat and was able to administer treatment before the boat came alongside at St Catherine’s breakwater.’

Steve Quérée who was having breakfast at the Breakwater Café at the time said: ‘I was just having breakfast at the Café when I noticed two immigration officers walking down the slipway.

‘The lifeboat pulled in with a passenger on-board and as I was leaving the area, an ambulance flew past me at quite high speed.

‘I saw the immigration officers questioning the person that was taken off the vessel and they were still there when I left.’

Assistant director for Customs and Immigration, Andy Hunt, said: We were dispatched this morning just to check who was on the vessel.

‘From what I understand it was a French charter vessel operating out of Carteret with schoolchildren on-board.

‘Everything was in order and there was nothing of interest for the officers to deal with.’
