Flags at the school were being flown at half-mast after Year 11 student Mr Huelin died at the weekend. Five teenagers, including at least three from the all-boys school, were this morning being held by police on suspicion of murder.
Boys within the same year were excused from attending school today and were being offered specialist counselling. The police have confirmed that officers will be attending the school today to support both students and staff.
Alun Watkins, head teacher at Victoria College, said: ‘Following the tragic events of this weekend, Victoria College would like to extend its sincerest sympathy to the family of the boy concerned.
‘Our priority at this time is to support our students, their families and our staff, and appropriate support is being put in place.
‘The school is working very closely with the States of Jersey Police on the ongoing investigation and, in view of this, there will be no further comment from the school at the moment.’
Detective Superintendent Stewart Gull added that ‘if necessary’ officers would conduct interviews with students at the college.
He said: ‘We have already had a good response from the public. If we need to speak to any individual we will seek their support. We will work in support of the school in particular on Monday as this is a difficult time for them.’
Meanwhile, the Jersey Youth Service has said that they are open between 12 pm and 6 pm today for anyone aged between 14 and 25 who may wish to seek support. They can be contacted on 280500.
