Last night the four-day festival began on Victoria Avenue with a kart race and a twisty sprint involving vehicles weaving in and out of lay-bys.

Tonight the road will again become a racetrack as more than 60 cars and bikes reach speeds of up to 100 mph in the moonlight sprints.

Over the weekend, drivers will test out their skills on two of the Island’s most winding circuits as they compete in hill climbs at Westmount and Mount Bingham.

And in the People’s Park there will be performances from stunt bike rider Mattie Griffin and trial bikes team Inch Perfect.

Motoring fans will get an opportunity to feel what its like to drive a supercar on the Top Gear Experience simulator, as well as the chance to view rare cars dating back to the early part of the 20th century.

Robert Surcouf, president of the Classic and Vintage Racing Club of Jersey, said that the event would offer something for all of the family.

‘As well as the popular moonlight sprints and the two hill climbs, we have tried to branch out this year – the Top Gear Experience and Inch Perfect trial bike team have never been to the Island and both will be real draws,’ he said.

‘In previous years I have seen grandfathers and great-grandfathers discussing cars with younger generations of their families.

‘It’s not only great entertainment, but a great bonding experience.’

Mr Surcouf added: ‘There’s a real opportunity to develop the festival in the coming years to make it into a week-long event to get more and more visitors to the Island.’

Victoria Avenue is due to be closed from 7 to 11.30 tonight, with Westmount closed from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm tomorrow and Mount Bingham closed from 9 am to 4 pm on Sunday.
