And he said the proposal was not about saving money, but rather trying to maintain the mental health and wellbeing of Islanders, with research showing that the longer people are out of work, the harder it is for them to return.

At present, short-term incapacity benefit is worth £196.42 a week for an individual, rising to £326.06 if they have a wife or husband or another adult who is dependent on them financially.
