Now, senior managers at Weymouth and Portland Borough Council are due to meet Stephen Hammond, the par liamentary under secretary of state for transport, to discuss funding options.

The council, which has recently spent £4 million up grading its harbour to allow Condor’s existing vessels to

continue serving the port, is keen to encourage the operator to maintain its service amid fears over job losses if it pulls out.

James Fulford, chief executive of Condor Ferries, has moved to reassure the Weymouth community. ‘We are a long-standing customer of Weymouth harbour, having operated from there for many years, and we value our close relationship with the town,’ he said.
