The annual charity swimming marathon began on Wednesday when the Lieutenant-Governor, General Sir John McColl, and Lady McColl officially opened proceedings at Les Quennevais.

In keeping with tradition, the Disabled in Pools swimmers were the first in the water to try to complete as many laps as possible in their 55-minute time slot.

The Swimarathon continues until Sunday.

• A souvenir colour supplement of the event will be published by the Jersey Evening Post on Wednesday 19 March
