Jersey to drive global use of electric cars?

The Environment Scrutiny panel has recommended a States-led initiative to promote the use of electric vehicles as part of its report on plans to slash carbon emissions in the coming decades.

But Environment Minister Rob Duhamel, who recently responded to Scrutiny’s recommendations, has urged caution over making radical changes in the short-term as ground-breaking technology in the form of hydrogen-powered cars is ‘just around the corner’.

‘I think the Island could be at the cutting edge of whatever modern technology is coming on to the market,’ Deputy Duhamel said.

‘There are huge amounts of technology about to come forward. We should keep our options open and perhaps be a little more circumspect in terms of picking a winner.’
