It was revealed at the start of this year that there is a wide gulf between police salaries in Jersey and the UK, with starting pay in the Island more than 70 per cent higher than in the UK.
In January the UK Home Secretary announced that the starting salary for police constables in England and Wales was to be cut by £4,000 to £19,000 a year – compared with the Jersey starting figure of more than £32,000 a year. After just four years in the job, a Jersey police officer’s basic pay is £48,107.
Home Affairs Minister Ian Le Marquand said at the time that there would be a major review of police salary and conditions, but that no changes would be brought in before 2015 as a three-year pay deal had recently been signed.
