Hugh Raymond has warned that if more shops opened on Sundays fewer children would be taken to play football, netball or other sports.
A similar UK move, he said, had previously seen a drop in children’s Sunday sporting activities that were only now beginning to get back to previous levels.
His warning follows comments from Economic Development Minister Alan Maclean who has suggested Sunday trading laws could be relaxed for large shops in order to generate more business and breathe new life into Jersey’s economy.
Mr Raymond has also questioned why the Island has failed to recognise that investing in sport could boost funds by increasing Jersey’s capacity to host national sporting events to attract visitors.
