Let’s gamble on the Fort’s future

From Denise Shrives.
THERE has been quite a lot about the island of Madeira lately and it is a lovely place to holiday. We go every year for a week, so I feel I can make the following comments.
Madeira has a wonderful bus service running out of Funchal which covers the whole island – if they can, why can’t Jersey?
You can have a very nice evening out to the casino, with a restaurant and a show on the top floor. You can enjoy the food and the show, but you don’t have to go to the casino if you don’t want to gamble. Please remember, this is a very religious Island, but they know how important tourism is on all levels. Why can’t Jersey take a leaf out of their book?
The point I would like to make is that we have a fabulous building just crying out for renovation, which could become a great tourist attraction, and that, of course, is Fort Regent.
If we had a casino at the Fort some of the profits could be ploughed back into running the Fort. There is no more threat to the population from a casino than there is from ‘on-line’ gambling and the many gambling shops open all over the Island.
It would be a good idea to have a courtesy bus running from Fort Regent to Aquasplash and have one ticket to cover both entry costs. The old swimming pool complex could be turned into a ski school with a dry slope.
The land below the learner driving spaces at Mount Bingham could be turned into a professional all-weather skate/BMX park with a roof over. The roof could be a wild flower garden to attract wildlife to the area.
The most important thing would be reinstalling a cable car and having a courtesy bus from Liberation Station to the Fort.
Come on, States and Tourism department members, we have a beautiful Island with lots of natural beauty. But it’s not so appealing in the pouring rain, so do something to attract the modern tourist.
