Kristin Hinds was surfing near Kempt Tower around 6.30 pm when he noticed a young man and woman struggling in the water.

He said the pair were clearly beginners and decided to keep an eye on them because they did not look confident on their surfboards.

Mr Hinds could then see the two being dragged even further out by a strong current so he made a move, paddling against the high winds to try and help.

A kayaker in the area had also noticed the young couple in trouble and starting making his way out to the pair.

Mr Hinds helped saved the boy, who he said was petrified, by tying him to the leash on his board while the kayaker towed the girl to safety.

‘If we had not seen them and they were left for another couple of minutes they would have been in huge trouble,’ said Mr Hinds.

‘I had been keeping my eye on them for a while and eventually they must have just given up because they were so exhausted.

‘They were getting pulled out so quickly because the rip and wind were so strong that it would have only taken minutes for them to be another couple of hundred metres out.

‘It took me around 20 minutes to paddle out to them because of the conditions and I was absolutely exhausted myself.’

He added: ‘Unless you surf down there frequently, you do not realise how dangerous it is and there could have been a really serious accident.’

Mr Hinds said the pair were already 500 metres from shore when he first noticed them.

He believes the couple were in their young twenty’s but only had a brief exchange of words with them after getting back to shore.

Mr Hinds said they were shaken up but did not suffer any injuries.

‘That rip between Kempt Tower and Secrets is so strong but there are no warning signs around there,’ he said.

‘There needs to be some danger signs or extra lifeguard patrols around that area because I have seen so many newcomers get into trouble over the years.

‘By the time I got out to the lad he did not even have the strength to lie on his board and it just shows what easily could have happened.’

Mr Hinds said he unfortunately did not get the name of the kayaker.
