Deputy Trevor Pitman has lodged two amendments to plans for a referendum on States reform due to be debated next week, both of which he says will make the system fairer than what is currently proposed.

One proposes varying referendum voting option B – which keeps the Constables in the States but reforms the system – by having 46 States Members rather than the proposed 42. The extra four seats would then be split equally between the two St Helier districts recommended by the Electoral Commission.

He has also called on Members to scrap plans for a complicated transferable voting system and change voting option C to read simply ‘none of the above’.

Deputy James Reed has also lodged an amendment calling for a total of 48 States Members rather than the proposed 42, with one more Deputy for each of the six large districts.
