Minister ‘misled’ Taser investigation

Senator Ian Le Marquand has admitted that, on advice from the States Police, he told the Education and Home Affairs Scrutiny panel that there had been a ‘notable rise in incidents requiring a firearms response in the last two years’ and tasers would provide an alternative response.

However, after the panel questioned the evidence the Minister has now accepted that the statement was misleading.

Instead, he said the rise had been down to a number of royal visits and the prosecution of drugs baron Curtis Warren which required armed police at every court appearance and when he was transported.
