Relief Magistrate David Le Cornu asked Centenier Tony Batho to look into how the unemployed homeless man had ended up back in Jersey within 48 hours.

The court heard that the man had been bound over to leave Jersey for three years after admitting stealing alcohol worth £4.50 on 30 July from Spar, David Place, and being found to be drunk and incapable on 28 July in Hue Street.

The 42-year-old was sentenced on 15 August by the Magistrate’s Court but on Monday was brought back to court, having breached the order and was jailed for a month.

The court heard that he travelled to Guernsey and when he could not get a job, was put up at a shelter before being returned to Jersey at the expense of the Guernsey authorities.
