The Economic Development department has agreed to give a one-year sponsorship deal of £75,000 to the club as it competes in the second tier of English rugby.

If they see the benefits of the sponsorship – such as an increase in people coming to the Island and business investment – then they would consider on-going sponsorship.

Asked if this was a good use of taxpayers’ money when there are many corporate sponsors waiting in the wings, Economic Minister Alan Maclean said: ‘Yes, we do. The club has been fabulously supported by many corporate sponsors and they continue but as they enter the second tier of English rugby, the level of costs increases.’
