Yesterday passengers spoke of their terror as car alarms sounded, duty-free products crashed to the floor and people were thrown around as winds gusting to gale force nine and huge waves unexpectedly battered the Condor Express just north of Alderney.

The ferry company has now confirmed that three members of staff were hurt during the incident, although none required hospital treatment.

Around 25 cars also sustained damage to their bodywork and the ferry, which had been on its way from Poole to Jersey via Guernsey, also had to have some repairs.

The ship remained in Guernsey for the damage to be assessed and passengers travelling to Jersey were transferred onto Commodore Clipper.
