Olympic yachtsman to sail replica of famous Jersey craft

Eleonora, which was built to the exact dimensions and finish of the legendary racing yacht Westward, is expected to return to Jersey on 21 June.

And it is hoped that, weather permitting, the 49.5 -metre-long yacht will sail around the coast of the Island during her three-day stay.

Eleonora, owned by former Swiss banker Zbynek Zak, first visited Jersey in the summer of 2010, when she was welcomed into the Harbour by a flotilla of Island boats. Mr Zak has announced that he will bring the yacht to the Island again this June after taking part in the Westward Cup, a race which he has helped to organise for Cowes Week.

Meanwhile, it has been announced that Olympic gold medallist Ben Ainslie will sail Eleonora in the round-the-island race at the Isle of Wight on 30 June. The 35-year-old sailor will co-helm with Mr Zak, with help from the ship’s captain, Mike McMillan.
