Despite pleas to save the pet by both the dog’s owner and the family of the victim, a judge ruled that the animal – a 17-month-old Husky crossed with an Alsatian – was dangerous and ordered it to be destroyed.
The Magistrate’s Court heard that the girl suffered four puncture wounds to the lower part of her cheek and a larger puncture wound to the left hand side of the bridge of her nose, close to the corner of her eye, in the attack on 6 April.
Relief Magistrate Peter Harris, who considered his verdict for about 40 minutes, said that with a ‘heavy heart’ he had to order that the dog be destroyed.
Advocate Lucy Marks told the court that the family would be appealing against his decision.
