Since the unprecedented golden handshake was first revealed, it has remained a mystery why Mr Ogley quit his job as the Island’s most senior chief officer.

However, the answer was made public yesterday in the report by Comptroller and Auditor General Chris Swinson, who was asked by the States to look into several controversial pay-offs.

In his report, Mr Swinson reveals the contents of a letter written by Mr Ogley to the then Chief Minister, Terry Le Sueur, about Senator Ozouf. Mr Ogley wrote: ‘Over the last two years a sustained period of interference and harassment by the Deputy Chief Minister and Treasury Minister has made it impossible to do my job to the best of my ability.’
