But the cost has been defended by Economic Development Minister Alan Maclean.
With up to 2,000 jobs on the line, Jersey is planning to take the UK government to court to stop them closing Jersey firms’ access to Low Value Consignment Relief – the £15 threshold below which goods can be imported from outside the EU into the UK without attracting VAT.
Concern has been raised about the cost of the action – Jersey is planning to spend £360,000, while it has been reported that Guernsey’s legal budget is £60,000.
However, Senator Maclean said that the two budgets were not comparable.
He said: ‘I assume that they have estimated the cost for the first stage. Our estimate is that £360,000 will be broadly the cost of the full action, all the way through the High Court, whereas I suspect that the Guernsey estimate does not include everything.’
