To this day no one knows who the man was, where he came from or how he died.

Yet at a poignant service at Surville Cemetery led by the Dean of Jersey, the Very Rev Bob Key, 15 people turned out to pay their final respects to the man found on the beach at Havre des Pas on 21 February 2008.

Each had their own personal reasons: there were the journalists who had followed his story and the international appeal for information about him, the forensic scientists who had tried in vain to discover his identity, and the Deputy Viscount Peter de Gruchy, who had led the inquest into the man’s death.

Other members of the public were also present, with most saying that they simply did not want him to be alone at his funeral.
