St Helier No 1 Deputy-elect James Baker, who topped the poll in the district in last month’s elections, blamed his high speed on the fact that he was rushing about to sort things out for his campaign.
In the Magistrate’s Court yesterday Baker, a former Army captain and son of former St Helier Constable Peter Baker, admitted breaking the speed limit on his motorbike on 9 October on Grande Route de Faldouet, St Martin.
Assistant Magistrate Bridget Shaw said that because it was such a high speed she would be considering imposing a driving ban. Deputy-elect Baker said that he had not realised that and the Assistant Magistrate asked him if he would like her to adjourn the hearing so he could prepare his case on why he should be allowed to keep his licence.
He agreed and the case was put off until next Thursday. She released the Deputy-elect, who lives at Mont de Rozel, St Martin, on bail.
