States Members yesterday voted 34 to two in favour of the move, which it is hoped will stimulate competition and eventually drive down the cost of fuel.

The debate was quickly brought to a close after Economic Development Minster Alan Maclean, who had originally spoken out against the proposition, changed his mind and backed the proposal.

The proposition was brought to the House by Senator Alan Breckon following a study into fuel prices by the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority.
