Vehicles are too wide for our narrow roads

From John de Carteret.
ONE has to have sympathy for the young cyclist badly injured in a collision with a bus on Rozel Hill (JEP, 12 August).
Equal sympathy must also be given to the bus driver who along with his fellow drivers is expected, on a daily basis, to manoeuvre oversized buses on small Jersey roads.
Yet another basket-case decision made by States Members years ago without looking at facts and consequences – a bit like the recent most anti-democratic decision to reduce Senatorial seats, totally missing the 1947 original concept of stability and continuity resulting in accountability to the voter.
Some of our £3 million a year subsidised buses are what look like six inches over the normal size, whereas almost every other commercial HGV user has to build vehicles to the 7ft 6 in width limit, although there are exceptions, including private horse boxes.
One has to hope that such vehicles – and the enormous tractors and trailers driving around – will not result in a fatality in the near future.
