On their marks in Sicily

All six sports were in action today including athletics, gymnastics and swimming. The tennis team were due to play yesterday but received a bye and will play Mayotte in the boys’ event and either Malta or Martinique in the girls’ section today.

Yesterday the sailors were able to enjoy a day of head-to-head team racing as practice on the water, where they earned a hard-fought victory over Madeira, before today’s fleet racing gets under way.

However, the official competition started in table tennis as they began their team event. With no third member, the girls’ team of Kelsey Le Maistre and Victoria Barnes had a tough task ahead of them and suffered 3-1 defeats to the Azores and Sicily and 3-0 to Madeira with both girls winning one match each.

Best play

For the boys there was a 3-0 win over Mayotte before 3-0 defeats to top seeds Cyprus and Sardinia and a 3-2 loss to Martinique where Chris Morshead picked up the two wins, playing the best table tennis, coach Craig Gascoyne said he has ever seen him play.

The team, which also includes Michael Fisher and Harry Messervy, will play off for seventh place tomorrow morning while the girls take on Sardinia in their final round robin game before the doubles event starts in the afternoon.
