Top seed Cann, who has been plagued with injuries since winning two bronze medals for England at last year’s Commonwealth Games in Delhi, was sent crashing by 15-year-old Yorkshire schoolgirl Chloe Birch 21-18, 13-21, 24-22 – despite leading 20-18 in the decider after hitting back from 17-11 down.

Another Jersey girl, Mariana Agathangelou, warmed up for her assault on the women’s doubles title with a victory alongside Andy Ellis in the mixed doubles yesterday, beating Kiristian Roebuck and Emma Hendry 21-17, 21-18.
