Why was there only a trickle of truth on abuse inquiry?
Share this:
From Lenny Harper.
ANYONE who has watched the truth about the historic abuse inquiry trickling out over the past 12 months will know only too well why the Jersey government have reneged on their promise to hold the Committee of Inquiry.
Such a committee would have seen the trickle of truth turn into a torrent and the full extent of the brutalities inflicted on the victims and the lengths gone to in attempts to cover it up would have been exposed for the world to see. Forget all claims of consideration for those victims. There has been nothing but contempt for those who suffered, from the majority of the Jersey establishment.
Forget also any worries about costs. Well over half of the £7.5 million spent on the investigation was spent after I retired as deputy chief of the States police in August 2008, much of it, seemingly, on increasingly desperate attempts to prevent the truth from coming out and curtailing the hopes of justice for the victims.
The statement of the Jersey Care Leavers Association shows once again that they are the last people the government considered when releasing their statement. Their dignity and courage stand in marked contrast with the so-called government of the elected and non-elected variety.
