Jersey Heritage Trust will manage the survey, which will take place next year and in 2012, on behalf of Planning.

All existing buildings of local interest, including sites such as the former Odeon cinema, and sites of special interest will be labelled as listed in one of four grades, but the change will have no immediate effect on the planning controls for historic buildings.

Environment Minister Freddie Cohen said: ‘The current system of BLI and SSI is confusing and doesn’t protect our listed buildings as well as it might. This new system will identify the most important buildings and ensure that they are properly protected. So-called lesser buildings will only have the important elements protected.
