POLLS close in under an hour in today’s Senatorial by-election and, unless there is a late surge, a disappointly low turnout is expected.

It has been a long day for those supervising the election, which was called following Stuart Syvret’s departure from the States because he had been absent from the Island for six months.

He chose to put himself foward to regain his seat, however, and is one of the nine candidates who have faced the electorate at 12 public meetings over the last fortnight. The winner will take up the post for the last 18 months remaining on the Senatorial seat before general elections next year.

Voting began at 8 am and will end at 8 pm, with the final result expected to be declared by around 10.30 pm.

There are no women among the candidates who are Gerard Baudains, Nick Le Cornu, Francis Le Gresley, Philip Maguire, Peter Remon-Whorrall, Gino Risoli, Pat Ryan, Deputy Geoff Southern and Stuart Syvret.

• Check here for the result later tonight and find out what the successful candidate has to say in Thursday’s Jersey Evening Post.
