Several insurance companies are refusing to pay out because disruptions caused by a so-called act of god – like an eruption – are not covered.

Tim Wiseman, of Cherry Godfrey insurance brokers, said that he had received advice that at least one of the companies he dealt with were not paying out because it was a natural disaster.

‘My advice to members of the public would be to contact the airline for information in the first instance,’ he said. ‘There is going to be the issue of people incurring additional accommodation costs, and alternative travel costs or similar.
