The eruption happened late yesterday under a glacier in the Eyjafjallajoekull area of Iceland.

Flights all over the country were disrupted as a result of the plume of very fine grey ash – which can cause catastrophic problems for aircraft – moving south.

And Airport spokesman said that there would be no flights in or out of Jersey between 1 pm and 8 pm today, and advised Islanders whose flights had been cancelled to contact their airlines for advice.
