States Members had already decided not to create a new holiday in return for the day off that workers will miss out on this year because Liberation Day falls on a Sunday.
Yesterday’s proposition by Deputy Montfort Tadier would have officially designated 9 May this year as a public holiday, guaranteeing anyone who has to work on the day an extra day off to compensate.
His proposition was defeated by 33 votes to 13 after Chief Minister Terry Le Sueur urged the States to wait for the result of a recently-completed review on an automatic system of moving holidays that fall on the weekends – as Liberation Day does this year and as Boxing Day did last year.
