David de Carteret said that UK holidaymakers – who represent the bulk of travellers to Jersey – were unlikely to go away in June and July because they would want to support England.

‘At this stage, it is a warning,’ he said. ‘It is something we need to be very much aware of and we need to work hard over the next few months to make sure we sell Jersey as effectively as we can.’

Mr de Carteret added that a UK general election could affect also visitor numbers.

‘A lot of people will want to stay in the UK and vote,’ he said.
