Simon Livingstone stabbed the man with ‘considerable force’ four times in the stomach. His victim needed to be resuscitated and later needed emergency surgery.

The Royal Court heard how the 33-year-old, who is from Scotland, stabbed his victim with a penknife on 23 August last year.

When delivering the court’s sentence, the judge condemned knife crime and warned that offenders would be severely dealt with.

Commissioner Sir Philip Bailhache said: ‘This sort of violence in St Helier is completely unacceptable and knife crime in particular will be severely punished.

‘There is much to be said in your favour and I hope you never again appear before court in these circumstances.

‘But you must understand if you get yourself drunk and commit a crime which could easily have led to someone’s death you will go to prison.’
