Clayton, who last week won the singles and doubles titles at the Tennis Europe under-16 Marsa tournament in Malta, defeated Suffolk’s Mathew 6-4, 6-5 before then going on to win his quarter-final tie 6-2, 6-4 against Tim Prosser.

Clayton (15) defeated Kirby, his best friend on the tennis circuit, for the first time yesterday and it was a fine victory against the fifth seed. Later in the day he saw off Hampshire’s Prosser, the number three seed, who has a rating of 4.2 with Clayton rated 5.1.

Clayton plays No 2 seed Joshua Page today, an opponent who is an unknown quantity. Clayton’s father, Steve, said: ‘Obviously we are delighted with Scott’s progress and we are hoping he continues his recent good form today.’
