Jersey’s whole tax strategy came under attack after indications from some EU countries that the new ‘zero-ten’ corporate tax structure did not fit the requirements of the code of conduct on harmful tax practices. There were more warnings about swine flu as well as annual events such as the car rally, Durrell Dash and Big Book Sale. There was also tragedy when on 23 October, a man died in a fatal road accident at Longueville.

The month didn’t do badly for quirky stories, with a Millennium Town Park decided in the States by a ringbinder – Treasury Minister Alan Maclean was the Member who accidently voted in favour of the park to bring the vote to 23:22; Islanders were banned from feeding the birtds at St Aubin’s harbour; others were confused by new road signs in the area; and residents of Millais, St Ouen, reported a mysterious hum which was keeping them awake at night.
