The long-awaited Cambridge Centre for Housing and Planning Research review has been published today, confirming the initial findings leaked to the JEP last month.

The report states that: ‘The current structure is not fit for purpose:it cannot operate effectively; it cannot manage its portfolio; and it cannot invest where required.’

The Housing Department administers around 75% of the 6,200 social housing units in the Island, and has a regulatory role overseeing housing trusts and the private sector.

Professor Christine Whitehead, who carried out the review of social housing in Jersey, said: ‘The current financial arrangements are not viable in the longer term. Housing need an extra £7.5m a year to maintain the system properly, which is significant.’
