Sea lettuce warning

The green sea lettuce that is a common feature of summer in St Aubin’s Bay is apparently now a serious danger to life and limb. Reports from France state that toxic fumes given off by the green slimy mass have put a council worker into a coma and killed a horse in northern Brittany.

Holidaymakers around the town of Lannion have been told to stay away from beaches covered in the sea lettuce because, say doctors, it can give off lethal fumes when it rots.

Marine biologist Andrew Syvret said that the sea lettuce that had caused the health scare in Brittany was the same type that washes up in St Aubin’s Bay. He said: ‘It is exactly what we have in St Aubin’s Bay, and in very high concentrations it is not good.

‘It is causing beaches to be closed all the way along the north coast of Brittany, and has been for the last decade. The sea lettuce is what creates the smell of rotten eggs.’
