Gymnasts claim four medals on final day

Matthew Maletroit was in excellent form again as he took two silver medals on the high bar and rings, and a bronze on the parallel bars while 16-year-old Matthew Hill won a bronze medal on the pommel.

Men’s coach Ben Frith said: ‘It went quite well for us today, although we didn’t get any gold medals. Matthew Hill is buzzing about his bronze – he’s still young and there is room for improvement and I’m hoping one day he will be an Island Games champion.

‘James Evans competed the best he has done all week, on all six pieces of apparatus, especially on the floor where he impressed with two double leg circles and André Romeril was one of the youngest out there and performed really well too.

‘I didn’t get the landings in my floor routine and finished fourth by 0.1 on the parallel bars but Matthew Maletroit had some excellent performances for his medals, including a brilliant, well executed rings routine which won him a silver.’

Comparing the team to the stronger sides, such as the Isle of Man and the Faroe Islands, Frith added: ‘We are falling behind compared to them but it is tough when you don’t have a dedicated gymnastics facility. The Faroes are having one built and the Isle of Man has two, and until we’ve got that type of facility we are going to struggle to keep up.’

In the ladies’ event Elizabeth Appleyard had three top 17 finishes and Charlotte Sweeney two while Shinarah Le Blancq impressed to take 14th place on the asymmetric bars.
