The HLB Jackson Fox-sponsored squad face the Sarnians in a play-off for 11th and 12th place today, having lost their final group game yesterday against the Cayman Islands 3-0.
That leaves the ladies trailing at the bottom of the group, but coach Paul Adamson said the scores they’ve suffered have not been a fair reflection of their efforts.
He said: ‘Although we lost in three sets yesterday, it was really close – we only lost by nine points altogether, as the sets finished up 28-26, 25-20, 25-23. I think we always expected the competition to be tough, as volleyball is one of the most popular sports among the other islands. I don’t think it would have mattered which group we had been in.
But when you look at our results in the last two or three matches, some of the games have been really close, so it has been a bit disheartening. However, we do hope to beat Guernsey – that would be a really nice way to end the week.’
The men, meanwhile, have finished third in their group and go into a play-off today for fifth and sixth place against the Faroe Islands.
Adamson said: ‘Gibraltar on Wednesday was a tough match – we won 3-1, but we made it tough for ourselves. We knew we could beat them, and we knew we could beat Bermuda, which we did, but we knew Greenland would have to have a bad game for us to beat them, and the same with Saaremaa. But we actually performed really well against both of them. Overall it’s been a good campaign, and despite the disappointment for the ladies, we’ve all really enjoyed the week.’
