Last week it was announced that proposals had been lodged for a States debate on new legislation to increase protection for tenants who have housing qualifications.

But bureau manger Francis Le Gresley believes that many who rent properties may discover that they will not be able to benefit from enhanced protections, such as longer notice-to-quit periods.

He said that it was his understanding that existing leases would be exempt from the legal requirements if they are offered for renewal without any variations to the current provisions.
