JERSEY’S worst motoring offenders could face tougher fines and longer jail sentences as part of a huge overhaul of road traffic laws.
Home Affairs Minister Ian Le Marquand has called for maximum prison terms and fines for drink driving to more than double and fines for speeding to rise by 300%.
The penalties are designed to target serial offenders and criminals with serious previous convictions, and would not apply to first time offenders.
He said: ‘It’s all about striking a balance. Is it right that under the current powers someone can be jailed for 18 months for driving with no insurance but only six months for drink driving, no matter how bad the offence is? Personally, I don’t think that this is right.’
