THE Island could have more of a Mediterranean climate in the future, if current predictions prove correct.

Climate change could mean that average temperatures by 2080 could be 3ºC higher than at present, with much drier summers and winters with increased heavy rain but with almost no frosts.

Such a climate in the Island could lead to the growing of different crops like grapes and olives, and the return of more tourists, who would be likely to find Jersey an increasingly appealing destination. And Jersey Royals could be grown earlier, although there could be a bigger threat of potato blight.

These are just some of the predictions outlined in the Eco-Active report entitled Turning Point, produced by the Planning and Environment department and launched today by Environment Minister Freddie Cohen.
